Office of the Third Sector
As part of the Cabinet Office, the Office of the Third Sector leads work across government to support the environment for a thriving third sector (voluntary and community groups, social enterprises, charities, co-operatives and mutuals), enabling the sector to campaign for change, deliver public services, promote social enterprise and strengthen communities.
The Commissioner for the Compact is responsible to:
- The Rt Hon Liam Bryne MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
- Kevin Brennan MP, Minister for the Third Sector.
Created in May 2006, the Office of the Third Sector provides financial and political support to the Commission for the Compact, the Commissioner and Compact Voice, while respecting their independence. Campbell Robb is the Director General of the Office of the Third Sector.
The Compact applies to all Central Government Departments and their key agencies, including Non-Departmental Government Bodies, and to Government Offices for the Regions. Local Compacts apply to local Public Bodies.
Former Minister for the Cabinet Ed Miliband, speaking at the Commission for the Compact launch in April 2007, reinforced Government and the Office of the Third Sector's commitment to the Compact, calling for an alliance for cultural change.
