About the Commissioner
Sir Bert Massie is the newly appointed Commissioner for the Compact. His previous roles include Chair of Disability Rights Commission and was also chief executive of disability charity Radar.
Sir Bert Massie brings a wealth of experience to the role as an international expert in equality and social policy, having worked in the voluntary sector for 40 years. He has led both governmental and charitable organisations and has contributed to the drafting of UK legislation affecting disabled people.
In his role, Sir Bert Massie will push for greater public sector compliance with the Compact, the agreement defining Government’s responsibilities in dealing with charities and voluntary groups.
Sir Bert Massie said:
I am delighted to have the opportunity of contributing to the work of ensuring that the voluntary and statutory sectors work together closely to improve and enhance the services and support they offer to the public. The Commission for the Compact will ensure that the Compact is a living document that influences action.

Previous Commissioners
Helen Baker was interim Commissioner for the Compact whilst a new permanent Commissioner was appointed. Helen’s background in both the public and third sectors gave her the experience and expertise to ensure continuation of the drive to embed the principles of the Compact.
John Stoker worked closely with Ministers, senior government officials, regional funding bodies and chief executives of voluntary and community organisations on how to make the Compact as effective as possible and establish the foundations of a robust Commission for the Compact.

Commission for the Compact Launch - April 11 2007
Richard Corden joined the Commission for the Compact as Interim Chief Executive in June 2007 and was confirmed in that role in June 2008.
Richard has 20 years experience of working within Government on voluntary sector policy, on charity law and practice, and on the regulation of charities. He joined the Commission from HM Treasury, where he worked on the Government’s review of the role of the third sector in social and economic regeneration. Before that he worked in the Office of the Third Sector, where he was in charge of Government legislation (the Charities Act 2006) to reform and modernise the law and regulation of charities.
His earlier appointments were in the Home Office, the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit, and the Charity Commission.
